Next up in the Vive Le Color! Mandala series is a piece I did for my dear sister-friend Holly’s birthday. When I started this I didn’t know it was for her birthday, however her reaction to the piece when I was working on it told me this must belong to her.
This piece was started with a decision to stop procrastinating and start making art using watercolor pencils. I picked out a range of blues and started coloring and blending. I didn’t think to take a progress picture until I started blending using the Derwent Waterbrushes.
I’d like to wax poetic about these brushes for a minute. Other than being a little tricky to fill I absolutely love these! The tanks in them last an incredibly long time. It’s very easy to control the flow of water with them. I think the thing that stands out to me most is how easy they are to clean up. Nine times out of ten I just squeeze a little water through and any paint left in the bristles just rinsed out. Seriously, get a set!
I really enjoyed blending the colors as this progressed. There’s something about creating my own colors that just delights my soul.
When it was finished I went back in with a celery green colored pencil and filled in the scroll work. While I was very tempted to use yellow, it seemed to easy. In the end I love the way that the green made it pop. After trying several colors for the background I was surprised to find that the olive green was what brought it all together.
I hope you’ve enjoyed checking out my latest mandala.
Until next time…
